This is the last sampler in the series for the Surface Stitchery course – and those featured are French knots with and without tails, Bullion knots with and without tails, Raised Bullion, Bullion Rose, Coral knot, Coral zig-zag, Palestrina, Basque knot, Spider stitches – woven, ribbed and raised and ringed, Sorbello stitch, Single thread couching, Double thread couched with buttonhole, cross and open chain stitch, silk ribbon couched with detached chain with added French knots, Bokhara couching, Roumanian couching, and circular couching. Threads used were DMC Pearl # 5 and #8 and variegated silks by Stef Francis, plus some other hand dyed silks that had lost their labels. I had not realised until it was finished how wonky the border is……….but it serves the purpose and I am not going to do it again!
Currently I am working on some other small pieces as examples of unusual backgrounds to use for embroidery – using trapped threads under chiffon, soluable film, tyvek, painted bondaweb and various other experimental techniques that will be familiar to many of you. I shall show examples as they are done. I also have to do what the Guild calls a major piece which is supposed to demonstrate all we have learned. I’m planning to make a cover for the folio that must be submitted, and have made a start on the fabric for that – a densly quilted, then shrunk and dyed cotton creation, but I’m having a bit of difficulty getting the colour I would like – it is sitting in the dye bath for the third time!
