Why is it that whenever I have the dogs’ hair cut because of the hot weather, it then becomes unseasonably cold?? It happens every year, and the small dog can cope with it as she has a small amount of warming fuzz, even when she has had a summer clip. Having lost her extraodinarily thick double layer coat, Maggie the collie is now a velvet dog, certainly cooler when it is hot, but she now has little to keep her warm when the temperature drops at night. Last week we had minimum temperatures overnight of 5-6 degrees centigrade and despite being covered with a rug, and rolling into the smallest ball ever, she was obviously cold. Today I made her a coat using an old blanket as lining, and some rather fetching blue-gray tweed for the outside – I think the embarrassed look means she does not like it much, but hopefully she will get used to it and luxuriate in the extra warmth until her fur grows a bit more. They are both off to the kennels next week and I think she may need it.
