A week or so ago I went to the Melbourne Zoo – specifically to take photographs. I was disappointed as the place was full of long lines of chattering primary school children with their teachers, most animals were only visible through (dirty) glass, and the elephants and lions were not in their outside areas. I took a few decent photos, but not enough to make the trip worthwhile.
In contrast my own property is full of interesting creatures, and I can always find something fill my lens. For instance:-
This Koala was in one of my back garden trees recently, I was alerted to its presence by my dogs barking as they chased it up the tree. I think it is a relatively young one, and in very good health. I don’t actually see these very often, and this one did not stay long after it had a short snooze, but they do live in the surrounding forest and I have certainly heard their growling and snorts!
You have seen this bird before……….A Currawong. There have been a pair in the garden for a while, and I sometimes feed them so they are less frightened of me than one might expect.
In the last week, they have appeared with a young one……..still fluffy although fully grown, it follows them around and squawks constantly for food. It already has that grumpy look!
Here it is demanding to be fed a strawberry.
The parent birds are omnivorous, and obviously love berries. Despite careful netting, the raspberries are not safe at all.

It shows no respect for a wooden bird either!
At this time of year my garden is full of young Litoria ewingi, Southern Brown Tree frogs, and a favourite place is amongst the Hydrangea which grow just outside the back door. These were caught briefly and photographed on a flower pot of moss, which may give an idea of their size – about the size of a finger nail. All hopped away unharmed.

And then there are the insects……more of which you can see on Fractions in Time so don’t forget to visit the photo blog.

Very cool to have such wildlife right it your backyard! Those frogs are really the size of a thumbnail? Great pics!
I agree with Lyn. Your pictures have more than aesthetic value (which is huge), but they are so good, they surely would have a monetary value. If you think not, or you don’t need the money, you could always donate it to something that you care about, like preservation of gardens or saving the koalas (if they are in need of saving.) I am one of your many admirers, and if I was as good as you with the camera, I would be slicing a watermark across each photo and putting that little copyright notice at the bottom, as well as sending them on to some company that sells such things. Lyn is right.
Now I am going to send a private message, but I wanted to post this so others could see and most likely share my admiration for your work and photos. Happy New Year
You really don’t need to travel to zoos with all this wonderful wildlife around you do you? Fantastic photos as always.
Always a joy to see wildlife through your eye and lens! That first bird looks like a real dickensian character lol I wonder if they are considered to be like our crows? Most think they are a nuisance bird, nesting noisily in high rise multi plex nesting sites lol but I find these black, arrogant looking birds, like yours there, fascinating. Too cute too, to have mastered the netting lol
Hope however you celebrate, you have a good Christmas and I would think your own place would beat the zoo any day………..its a natural haven frather than artificial one.
Why dont you find one of those online photographic companies where you lodge your pics with them and businesses buy in from them, eg pics for the their ads etc?
I met a Uk chap who seemed to get anything from £25 to £500 a pic!
He reckons he has at least one cheque a month though I suppose the copyright goes to the online firm once youve handed it over?
It might be like letting go of one of the kids lol think Id be abit possessive of such fine photois but then its a shame not to get recompense and maybe widen your audience and the appreciation!
A koala in your tree…………..just bliss gal! And those weeny little froggy toes! Wonderful!
HI, love the froggy photos! How special are you having a koala in your garden.. wow.. shame about the zoo, but glad you had time to look in your garden…
